About Shanwei

Shanwei, long known as Hailufeng after its old counties of Haifeng and Lufeng, speaks a Southern Min dialect of its own and lives from the sea, with fishing harbours and beaches around Honghai Bay. In the coastal town of Jieshi, Yuanshan Temple crowns Xuanwu Mountain, and Haifeng keeps two old local opera forms, Xiqin and Baizi opera, both on China's national intangible heritage list. Haifeng's old Confucian school became the Red Palace in 1927, when Peng Pai proclaimed a soviet government there.
