About Tongren

Tongren is the gateway to Fanjingshan, the highest peak of the Wuling Mountains and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018, where Buddhist shrines cap rock pinnacles above forests that shelter the Guizhou snub-nosed monkey. Tujia people make up nearly two-fifths of the population, and Yunshe Village at the mountain's foot keeps Tujia stone lanes and timber houses. Wanshan, mined for cinnabar and mercury for over 2,000 years until 2001, has turned its miners' town into Zhusha Ancient Town.
