Xiantao 仙桃Xiāntáo
Water country of lakes and canals, and the home of steamed rice-coated dishes
About Xiantao
Xiantao, called Mianyang until 1986, is a county-level city of lakes, canals and rice fields between the Han River and the Yangtze, governed directly by the province. Its old name lives on in the Mianyang 'three steamed' dishes, meat, fish and vegetables coated in rice flour, a tradition said to go back to the army of the Yuan-dynasty rebel Chen Youliang. Mianyang Town, a new old-style town on Pai Lake, has craft workshops beside the water.
