Liaoyuan 辽源Liáoyuán
A small coal city at the head of the East Liao, where Allied generals were held

About Liaoyuan
Liaoyuan, the smallest of Jilin's prefecture-level cities, is named after the source of the East Liao River and grew as a coal-mining town, second only to Fushun as a coal producer under Manchukuo. Two sites recall the Japanese occupation: the Liaoyuan Miners' Mass Grave, where halls built over the burial pits hold miners' remains, and the camp where senior Allied prisoners, among them the American general Jonathan Wainwright and the British general Arthur Percival, were held in 1944–45.
