About Dongying

Dongying is one of Shandong's youngest cities, founded in 1983 on the Shengli Oilfield, where oil was found in 1961 and pumps still nod beside the fields. At the Yellow River Estuary Eco-Tourism Area the river reaches the Bohai Sea and silt keeps building new land; the delta reserve shelters migrating birds, including the largest breeding population of the Oriental stork, and turns red with seepweed in autumn. Inland, Guangrao's Sun Tzu shrine centres on a hall built in 1128 as a Guandi temple.
