About Chemurchek Stone Figures and Stone-Cist Tombs

A Bronze Age burial ground of the Chemurchek culture, of about 2700–1800 BC, spread over some 44 km² of steppe around Chemurchek town west of Altay city, with large stone-walled grave enclosures, cairns ringed with stones and stone cists. Carved stone figures stand on the east side of the graves facing the sunrise, and this pairing of stone figure and stone cist is the hallmark of the culture. A representative 113 cm figure from the Kaiyinar No. 2 cemetery was moved in 2002 to the Altay Prefecture Museum, where visitors can see it.
