On Nankan Mountain, on the southern edge of central Bazhong, more than 170 niches holding about 2,700 painted Buddhist figures were cut into the cliffs, most of them in the Tang dynasty. It is the largest and best preserved of the Bazhong Grottoes, a protected group that also includes the smaller North Niches, West Niches and Shuining Temple carvings around the city.
