About Baoguo Temple

A large temple of the southern city, rebuilt in 1466 as Ciren Temple and renamed in 1754, where the scholar Gu Yanwu lodged in 1668 and a shrine to him was added in the 1840s; it was the city's best-known book market in the late Ming and early Qing. After use as a factory and offices it was restored and from 1997 to 2020 housed a famous collectors' market, and it is now the Baoguo Temple Cultural Park, which holds second-hand book fairs and cultural events in its courtyards.
