About Guangning City, Beizhen (Drum Tower and Li Chengliang Arch)

Guangning was the Ming-dynasty garrison city of Beizhen, and two of its landmarks stand on the main north–south street: the Drum Tower of 1563, a two-storey tower on a brick-and-stone base pierced by a gateway, and the stone memorial arch of 1580 to the Ming frontier commander Li Chengliang, about 9 m high. A stair of 39 steps leads up to the platform of the Drum Tower, which the provincial heritage department describes as one of Beizhen's tourist sights. Most of the 7 km city wall was pulled down in the 1960s and 1970s and a ring road follows its line, but a 378 m stretch of brick wall and a 1,250 m stretch of rammed-earth wall are preserved.
