About Old Bengbu Huai River Railway Bridge

A steel truss railway bridge across the Huai River at Bengbu, completed in May 1911 for the Tianjin–Pukou Railway; its opening turned Bengbu from a small market town into a railway city. Blown up in 1938 and again in 1949 and repaired each time, it was lengthened in 1987–1988 and still carries the Beijing–Shanghai line, now beside a twin bridge built in 2002. A monument at its southern end remembers six army railway divers who died while the crossing was being restored in 1949–1950.
