About Yuelu Academy

Founded in 976 under the Northern Song at the eastern foot of Yuelu Mountain, Yuelu Academy was one of China's most renowned Confucian academies, where the Neo-Confucian scholars Zhu Xi and Zhang Shi lectured, and its courtyards of lecture halls, library, shrines and a Confucian temple were restored after damage in the Cultural Revolution. It became the Hunan Institute of Higher Learning in 1903 and is part of Hunan University, whose early campus buildings around it, from the Western-style Second Building of 1926 to Liu Shiying's auditorium and old library of 1946–53 with traditional-style roofs, are also protected. Most visitors combine it with a walk up Yuelu Mountain behind.
