About Xihuang Temple

A Tibetan Buddhist temple built in the early 1650s to house the Fifth Dalai Lama on his visit to the Qing court, and since 1987 the seat of the High-Level Tibetan Buddhist College of China. Its centrepiece is the Qingjing Huacheng Pagoda, a white diamond-throne stupa completed in 1782 as a memorial to the Sixth Panchen Lama, who died at the temple in 1780. Part of the complex opened as the Xihuang Temple Museum in 2018, with displays on the pagoda, the Panchen Lamas and Tibetan Buddhist art.
