About Yanzhou Mountain Fortress

Yanzhou, once called Baiyan City, is a Goguryeo mountain fortress begun in 403 on Shicheng Hill above the Taizi River, which the Tang army took in 645. Walls of dressed blue-grey stone, with nine bastions on the north and west sides and a cliff on the south, enclose a site roughly 480 m by 440 m with a gate site, a reservoir, a well and a stone lookout platform at the highest point. Archaeologists worked here from 2009 to 2017, and the provincial heritage department calls it a representative late Goguryeo fortress in Liaoning.
