About Ming Zhongdu Imperial City
The remains of the 'Central Capital' that Zhu Yuanzhang began building at his birthplace in Fengyang in 1369 and abandoned in 1375; its planning served as the model for the later palaces of Nanjing and Beijing. Much was pulled down for bricks and farmland between 1950 and 1975, and what survives is part of the imperial-city wall with its gates, among them the Wu (Noon) Gate, and the base of the drum tower; most other structures are reconstructions from the 1990s onwards.
