About Kang Baiwan Manor
The fortified hillside estate of the Kang family of merchants and landowners, who lived here for some four centuries from the late Ming, at Kangdian beside the Luo River in Gongyi. Built against the loess slope and ringed by walls, it combines street-front houses with cave dwellings: 33 courtyards, 53 multi-storey buildings and 73 cave dwellings in all, with fine brick, wood and stone carving. The rooms keep the family's furniture and inscribed boards, among them the well-known 'Liuyu' plaque of family precepts.
