About Chen Gelao Mansion
The mansion of the Chen clan of Haining, greatly enlarged by Chen Yuanlong (1652–1736), a minister under the Kangxi Emperor who became a grand secretary under Yongzheng; 'gelao', a name for grand secretaries, gives the house its name. Qing buildings survive on the eastern axis, among them the ancestral hall, the family's sleeping quarters, a study and a flower hall, while the central halls were rebuilt in 2002–03. The house keeps a set of calligraphy steles, a nine-dragon plaque granted by the Yongzheng Emperor and a Ming-era podocarp tree.
