About Yanguan Tide-Watching Area

Yanguan, the old county seat of Haining on the north bank of the Qiantang River, is the classic place to watch the river's tidal bore, which arrives here as a single long wave, with the largest tides around the 18th day of the eighth lunar month. A stone seawall of interlocking 'fish-scale' blocks, built in the Qing dynasty, runs along the riverside tide-watching park, overlooked by the seven-storey Zhan'ao Pagoda of 1612. In the old town behind are the Sea God Temple, built on imperial order in 1729, and the childhood home of the scholar Wang Guowei.
