About Dongzhou Island
An island about 2 km long in the Xiang River in central Hengyang, whose peach blossom ('Dongzhou peach waves') was one of the city's eight traditional views. Its main sight is Chuanshan Academy, founded in 1878 in honour of the philosopher Wang Fuzhi and moved to the island in 1885 by Peng Yulin, who appointed the scholar Wang Kaiyun as its head; the academy was restored in a renovation of the whole island, which reopened in 2018. Luohan Temple, old camphor trees and a sandy beach at the island's tip, exposed when the river is low, complete a gentle walk.
