About Chuzang Monastery
A Gelug monastery in the hills north of Huzhu, founded in 1649 and one of four well-known monasteries of north-eastern Qinghai. Its buildings were damaged in the 1720s, rebuilt from 1732 and restored again after the Cultural Revolution; Qing records mention a Shakyamuni hall built in 1830 and a brick-carved nine-dragon screen approved for its front. It is a working monastery, set among steep hills beside the Nanmenxia reservoir.
