About Xingguo Temple Pagoda
An octagonal brick pagoda in Xingguo Park in the south-west of Jiangyin's old town, first built in the Taiping Xingguo era of the Northern Song (976–984) and raised from seven to nine storeys during a Ming repair. A fire in 1817 burned away its wooden eaves and finial, leaving the brush-shaped brick shaft that locals call the Wenbi ('writing brush') Pagoda, and in 1925 a shell fired from the Huangshan forts during a warlord war damaged its top storeys; it was strengthened in 1985 and 2005.
