About Houtu Temple, Jiexiu

A large Taoist temple complex of about 9,000 square metres in the north-west corner of Jiexiu's old town, extended in 1516 and given its present layout in 1730. It is best known for its glazed-tile work, with more colours than the usual yellow, green and blue and a main hall roofed entirely in yellow glaze, and for its many coloured clay figures, a large share of them Ming. The main buildings stand on two parallel axes, the western one running from the gate hall through the Sanqing Tower and an opera stage to the Houtu hall.
