About Beiting Ancient City (Beshbalik)

The earthen ruins of Beiting (Beshbalik), seat of the Tang Beiting Protectorate and later the summer capital of the Uyghur kingdom of Qocho, which was the leading city on the northern side of the Tianshan for some 700 years until its destruction in the 15th century. Its nested outer and inner walls survive and have been part of the Silk Roads World Heritage listing since 2014; west of the city stands the excavated Uyghur Buddhist temple known as Xidasi, a two-tier mud-brick building with niches, statues and murals. A site museum explains the city's history.
