About Tromzikhang (Qing Ambans' Office Museum)

A Barkhor courtyard building just north of the Jokhang that from 1728 served as the first office and residence of the ambans, the Qing court's resident commissioners in Tibet. Two ambans were killed here in the unrest of 1750 led by Gyurme Namgyal, and a memorial shrine was then built on the site. After restoration in 2012–13 it opened in July 2013 as an exhibition hall in seven sections, with recreated offices, multimedia displays and wax figures.
