About Hangu Pass
The site of the ancient pass that guarded the narrow corridor between the Central Plain and the Wei valley, fortified by the state of Qin in the Warring States period and fought over for centuries afterwards. Legend says that Laozi wrote the Tao Te Ching here at the request of the pass keeper Yinxi before heading west, and since 1992 the site has been rebuilt with a new east gate tower and Taoist halls such as the Taichu Palace.
