About Zhao Mausoleum

Zhaoling, on Jiuzong Mountain in Liquan County, is the mausoleum of Emperor Taizong of Tang (died 649) and the largest of the Tang imperial tombs; begun in 636, it was the first Tang imperial tomb cut into a mountain, and its many satellite tombs hold princes, princesses and ministers such as Wei Zheng and Li Jing. The Zhaoling Museum, set up at the satellite tomb of the general Li Ji, shows steles and epitaphs gathered from these tombs in its 'Zhaoling Forest of Steles' halls, together with Tang tomb murals and other finds. The Six Steeds reliefs that once stood at the mausoleum are now in Xi'an's Beilin Museum and in the United States.
