About Mount Fortress
The Jesuit-built fortress (Fortaleza do Monte) of 1617–1626 crowns Mount Hill above the Ruins of St Paul's. It was the city's main defence work, built to watch over the city in all directions, and helped hold off the Dutch attack of 1622. Its thick walls, 9 metres high and 3.7 metres wide at the base, have parapets for 32 cannon and now enclose a garden, the Macau Museum and a gallery in a former underground ammunition cellar that covers the history of Macau's fortresses.
How to get to Mount Fortress
On Mount Hill, a short walk east of the Ruins of St Paul's; the Mount Fortress Corridor escalators link it to Tap Seac Square.
