About Former St. Raphael Hospital (Portuguese Consulate-General)

St. Raphael Hospital was founded in 1569 by Bishop Belchior Carneiro and run by the Holy House of Mercy, and the Chinese called it I Yan Miu, the Temple of Cures. The Cultural Affairs Bureau describes it as the first Western-style hospital in Asia and the place from which smallpox vaccination reached China. The present building dates from the last rebuilding in 1939 and houses the Consulate-General of Portugal.
