About São Tiago da Barra Fortress

A small fortress (Fortaleza de São Tiago da Barra) at the Barra tip of the peninsula, built in 1629 with 16 cannon on the site of a simpler 1622 fortification, to guard the water entrance to the Inner Harbour. Its commander was appointed directly by the King of Portugal, and a chapel to St James, patron saint of soldiers, was added within the walls in 1740. The fortress was converted into a hotel, the Pousada de São Tiago, in 1981, with the chapel preserved.
