About Ruian Fort
A fortified manor begun in 1938 at Santao village south-west of Minqin, where a landowner's family compound sits inside high rammed-earth walls with honeycomb battlements; it is one of the best-preserved fortified farmsteads in north-west China, nicknamed the 'Palace Museum beyond the frontier'. Its courtyards follow a symmetrical 'front hall, rear chambers' plan with carved brick and timber detail, and the fort is managed together with the Minqin County Museum.
