About Former Beijige Meteorological Observatory

On the 62 m summit of Beiji Ge (Jilong Hill), used for watching the sky since the 5th century and the site of the Ming imperial observatory, Zhu Kezhen founded the Academia Sinica's Institute of Meteorology in 1927, and in 1930 the Qing Beiji pavilion was replaced by an observatory, regarded as the start of modern meteorological research in China. Its 1930s buildings, a two-storey traditional-style building by Yang Tingbao and a 14 m hexagonal observation tower, have housed the China Beijige Meteorological Museum since 2010, with exhibits on Chinese meteorology from ancient times to the present and a bronze statue of Zhu Kezhen.
