About Former National Central University

Southeast University's Sipailou campus keeps the core of the former National Central University, the national university of Republican-era Nanjing, with buildings mostly of the 1920s and 1930s in a Western classical revival style. A copper-domed auditorium of 1930–31 seating about 2,700 faces Yang Tingbao's 1933 south gate along the campus axis, flanked by the 1923 Mengfang Library and the 1929 biology building. The 1923 gymnasium hosted lectures by Bertrand Russell, John Dewey and Rabindranath Tagore, and an old juniper known as the Six Dynasties Pine stands by the Mei'an building.
