About Taiping Murals on Tangzi Street

A late-Qing courtyard house on Tangzi Street, just inside Hanzhongmen, which the Taiping rebels took over after capturing Nanjing in 1853 and used as an office and later a minor prince's residence, painting its walls and wooden partitions. Eighteen paintings survive in the main and rear halls, landscapes, birds, flowers and animals in a bold folk style with no human figures, one of them a watchtower guarding the Yangtze with warships below. The house serves as the Taiping mural art museum, which also shows copies of Taiping murals from Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui.
