About Zhan Garden

Regarded as the oldest surviving private garden in Nanjing, it was begun in the Ming dynasty by a descendant of the founding general Xu Da in the grounds of the family mansion, and named after an inscription by the Qianlong Emperor, who stayed here. Restored in the 1960s under the architect Liu Dunzhen, its western part has rockeries, covered walkways and a main hall surrounded by water on three sides. The eastern part houses the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom History Museum, recalling the garden's use by Taiping leaders after they took the city in 1853.
