About Ancient Opera Stages of Ninghai
Ninghai County keeps more than 120 old opera stages in temples and clan halls, and ten of them, mostly from the Qing dynasty and the Republican period, are protected together as one national monument. The best known, in the Hu clan hall at Aohu village (built in 1797 and enlarged in 1854), has three linked caisson ceilings spiralling over the stage and its corridors, and the others are similarly painted and carved. Together they show how village opera was staged in eastern Zhejiang.
How to get to Ancient Opera Stages of Ninghai
Aohu village is about 3 km north of Ninghai railway station and 5 km from the county town; the other nine stages are scattered across villages in Ninghai County and need a car.
