Why go to Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art
On a limestone cliff above the Ming River, ancient painters left a wall of red figures: squatting humans, bronze drums, swords, boats and running animals. You reach the panel by boat through quiet karst scenery, which is half the appeal. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been a 5A scenic area since December 2024.
The story
The paintings are attributed to the Luoyue people, regarded as ancestors of today's Zhuang, between roughly 1,800 and 2,500 years ago. The pigment was red ochre mixed with animal glue and blood, and the figures appear to show ritual scenes. The local Zhuang name Bailai means 'mountain with pictures'.
What to see at Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art
- Ming River boat ride 明江游船: A shuttle takes you from the visitor centre to the Bahe wharf, and the boat then runs about an hour down the Ming River between karst hills and farmland. The cruise is part of the experience; the whole trip takes three to four hours.
- The painted cliff 花山岩画主画面: A wall over 170 m wide and some 40 m high carries roughly 1,900 figures in about 110 groups. Look for the large squatting figures at the centre, ringed by bronze drums and weapons.
- Bayao land route 岜耀陆路线: A shorter alternative for those with their own transport: drive to the Bayao service point and cross to the viewing area by a short ferry, about two hours in all.
How to visit Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art
Most visitors take the shuttle from the visitor centre to the wharf and then the boat, which makes the whole trip three to four hours. Drivers can instead follow the road to the Bayao side and take a short ferry across, about two hours. Which parts of the shore path are open can change, so check the notice at the visitor centre. Allow half a day either way.
How to get to Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art
The fastest way is the high-speed train to Ningming East, a new station on the Nanning–Pingxiang line that opened in December 2025 (about 65 minutes from Nanning at best); a tourist bus line, number 88, is listed between the station and the Huashan visitor centre, but check it still runs. Coaches from Nanning to Ningming take about three hours. Carry your passport, as there are border checkpoints on the roads near the frontier.
Where to stay
Stay in Ningming county town for the widest choice, or in Chongzuo city, where the Zhuang museum has an exhibition on the paintings.
What to eat
- Ningming sour porridge 宁明酸粥: A sour, savoury rice porridge that locals eat through the hot months and that visitors often find an acquired taste.
- Five-colour glutinous rice 五色糯米饭: Sticky rice dyed with plant juices, the best-known Zhuang festival food, served at March 3rd and in local restaurants.
- Ming River roast pork 明江烧猪: Crisp-skinned roast pig, a well-known Ningming speciality sold in local restaurants.
Tips for visiting Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art
- Boat places are tied to a sailing time and sell out around national holidays, so book ahead through the scenic area's official mini-programme and collect your ticket at the visitor-centre desk with time to spare; ticket platforms sell only some of the sailings.
- Boats are suspended at high water, in heavy rain and in typhoons, so check the scenic area's latest notice the day before; a boardwalk renovation reportedly limited visits to viewing from the boat from June 2026.
- Bring your passport: ID checks are routine in this border region.
