Why go to Panjin Red Beach
The Red Beach scenic corridor follows about 18 km of the Liaohe delta coast, where tidal flats are carpeted with seepweed (Suaeda salsa) set against reed marsh and wetland. A winding wooden boardwalk and boat rides on the river channel let you out among the red, and the surrounding reserve shelters many birds. It has been a 5A scenic area since 2020.
The story
Seepweed is one of the few plants able to grow in the very salty, alkaline soil here. The shoots appear in spring in a pale red-green, turn jujube-red in September and October and fade as winter comes, so the beach looks different through the season.
What to see at Panjin Red Beach
- Nine-bend boardwalk 九曲廊桥: A winding wooden walkway of about 680 m on timber piles that leads out over the seepweed, the main way to get among the red.
- River boat ride 河道游船: Small boats run along the river channel through the red flats, a good way to see the reed edges and hear the birds.
- Reed marsh 芦苇荡: Wide reed beds around the red flats, part of the Liaohe delta wetland.
- Shuangtaizi estuary reserve 双台河口国家级自然保护区: A national nature reserve in the delta that protects wetland and the birds that breed here, including red-crowned cranes.
How to visit Panjin Red Beach
Enter by the main gate and start on the boardwalk, where you walk out over the red flats for photographs. Then take a boat along the river channel and look over the reed marsh on either side; ask at the gate what sightseeing vehicles are running. About half a day covers it; sunrise and sunset give the strongest colour.
How to get to Panjin Red Beach
The beach is in Dawa District on the Liaodong Bay coast, about 35 km from Panjin's urban area (a 40-minute to one-hour drive). High-speed trains from Shenyang reach Panjin North, in Panshan County, in roughly an hour; Panjin has two stations, so check which one your train uses, then take a taxi or tour.
Where to stay
Stay in Panjin city, which has the rail station and restaurants; the beach is a half-day trip from there. Overnighting nearer the coast helps if you want to catch sunrise.
What to eat
- Panjin river crab 盘锦河蟹: The delta is known for its river crabs, in season in autumn and sold boiled and steamed.
- Panjin rice 盘锦大米: Rice from the delta paddies, served in restaurants around the city as a local speciality.
Tips for visiting Panjin Red Beach
- Timing matters: the colour is strongest in September and October; earlier the plants are still green, later they dry and fade.
- Sunny, calm days and the low light around sunset show the colour best; one guide also advises arriving one to two hours after low tide, as the tide changes the view.
- Book entry and any boat ride at the official gate rather than from touts outside the scenic area.
