About Chagan Lake

Chagan Lake is a shallow freshwater lake of several hundred square kilometres in the north-west of Qian Gorlos Mongol Autonomous County, the largest natural lake in Jilin province and described by state media as one of China's ten largest freshwater lakes. Its headline is the winter fishing: from mid- or late December to about February, fishers cut holes through ice 70 cm to 1 m thick, draw a net more than a kilometre long beneath it and haul it out with horses turning a capstan, a method on China's national intangible heritage list since 2008. A fishing and hunting culture museum stands by the lake, and in the warmer months the area is promoted for spring outings, summer lotus and autumn birdwatching.
