Why go to Qingdao Old Town & Seafront
Qingdao tumbles down green hills to the Yellow Sea, its old town a patchwork of red-tiled roofs and stone buildings from the years of German rule. Walk out along Zhanqiao Pier, wander among the villas of Badaguan, then taste Tsingtao at the brewery where it has been made since 1903.
The story
Germany seized Qingdao in 1897 and built it as a model colonial port, leaving behind the brewery, a Protestant church and the hilltop governor's residence. Today locals still carry home draught beer in plastic bags, filled from street-side kegs and sold by weight.
