About Qionglai Cliff Carvings
Three groups of Tang-to-Song Buddhist cliff carvings around Qionglai are protected together: Pantuo Temple, Shisun Mountain and Huazhi Temple. At Pantuo Temple, on the outskirts of the city, carving began in 820 and four niches hold 1,099 figures, including the Three Sages of the West, a thousand-Buddha niche and a Pure Land scene. The Shisun Mountain group lies further north-west in the hills.
