About Maotai Liquor Town

Maotai is the town on the Chishui River where Moutai baijiu is made: distilleries there date back to the early 19th century, and it became a river port in 1745 when Qing officials opened the Chishui to shipping. The tourist district is the renovated riverside old town, where visitors can walk the streets, taste local baijiu and see the town lit up at night. A memorial tower on the riverbank recalls the Red Army's crossing of the Chishui at Maotai in 1935.
