About Zhenwu Pavilion & Rongzhou Old Town

The three-storey timber Zhenwu Pavilion was built in 1573 on the Jinglüe Terrace by the Xiu River, a platform said to date from the Tang dynasty, when the poet-official Yuan Jie drilled troops here. Its lever-like bracketing joins nearly 3,000 timber pieces without nails, and four inner columns on the second floor hang about 2 cm clear of the floor. Around it the former People's Park was rebuilt in 2014–16 as Rongzhou Old Town, a 25-hectare scenic area with a reconstructed prefectural hall, a museum, Kaiyuan Temple, an old-style shopping street and boat landings on Xiujiang Lake.
