About Former Residence of Cai Yuanpei
The birthplace of Cai Yuanpei (1868–1940), the educator who was president of Peking University and founder of the Academia Sinica, and earlier a leader of the anti-Qing Guangfuhui. It is a traditional Shaoxing taimen house bought by his grandfather in the Daoguang reign, whose gatehouse and main hall keep Ming-style features, with a two-storey rear building added later, in the Jishan (Shusheng Guli) historic quarter.
