About Shaoxing

Shaoxing was the capital of the state of Yue some 2,500 years ago, and black-awning boats still ply its canals under stone bridges such as Bazi Bridge. The writer Lu Xun grew up here, and his family home stands in the old town, as does the Shen Garden, linked with the love story of the Song poet Lu You. Outside the city are the Orchid Pavilion, where the calligrapher Wang Xizhi wrote his celebrated preface in 353, and the Mausoleum of Yu the Great.
