About Suzhou Confucian Temple (Stone Inscription Museum)

Suzhou's Confucian temple and prefectural school, founded in 1035 by the statesman Fan Zhongyan, who joined temple and school in a pattern later copied across China; it now houses the Suzhou Stone Inscription Museum. Its most important exhibits are four Southern Song steles: the Pingjiang Map of 1229, a detailed plan of the city with its walls, canals and bridges and the oldest surviving city plan in China, together with a star chart, a map of the Song empire and a chart of royal succession carved in 1247. The Ming Dacheng Hall of 1474 and a Ming stone gateway survive among buildings mostly rebuilt in 1864.
