Why go to Taoping Qiang Village
Taoping is a Qiang village of tightly packed stone houses above the Zagunao River, its homes linked by dim alleys, covered passages and rooftop walkways, with tall stone watchtowers rising over them. Qiang families still live in the old village, and guesthouses in the new village next door make it easy to stay the night. In 2024 UN Tourism named it one of its Best Tourism Villages.
The story
Local tradition dates the settlement to 111 BC, though its watchtowers are thought to date from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Spring water runs in covered stone channels beneath the houses, where residents could lift a slab to draw it, keeping the village supplied in times of siege. After the 2008 earthquake, the restoration of the old village, carried out with its residents, won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific award for heritage conservation in 2016.
What to see at Taoping Qiang Village
- Old village lanes 桃坪羌寨古寨: The old village is a maze of stone lanes about 1,960 metres in total, with eight radial exits from the centre, linking some 15 historic buildings. Outsiders get lost easily, which is part of the fun.
- Watchtowers 碉楼: Tall stone towers rise from the houses themselves, a hallmark of Qiang architecture and the village's best-known silhouette.
- Water channels 水网: Spring water is led through covered channels to every house. The system also cooled homes, fought fires and, the story goes, doubled as an escape route in wartime.
How to visit Taoping Qiang Village
Buy your ticket at the village gate and enter the old village on foot. Follow a local guide through the lanes and up to the rooftop paths, which gives the best sense of the layout. One to two hours covers the old village; staying the night adds the new village, an evening dance and a slow morning. Bipenggou is about 30 minutes' drive away.
How to get to Taoping Qiang Village
Taoping lies beside the Wenchuan–Maerkang expressway in Li County, about 140 km and roughly 2 hours by road from Chengdu. Buses from Chengdu towards Li County (Lixian) pass the village.
Where to stay
Stay in the new village beside the old castle, where small guesthouses sit within walking distance. Wenchuan is about 16 km away, and Li County town about 40 km, if you want more choice.
What to eat
- Cured bacon 腊肉: Smoke-cured pork is a staple of Qiang village kitchens and appears on guesthouse menus.
- Potato cakes 洋芋糍粑: Fried potato cakes, a hearty highland snack found in village restaurants.
