About Temple of Great Compassion (Dabei Yuan)

Tianjin's largest surviving Buddhist monastery, a working Chan temple founded in the mid-17th century, expanded in 1669 and extended with a large eastern compound in the 1940s. Its halls hold a Ming-dynasty bronze Shakyamuni, a hall of three Burmese jade Buddhas completed in 2000, and hundreds of older statues in stone, wood and bronze. A memorial hall to the monk Hongyi stands in the grounds.
