About Qinglong Temple

In Tang Chang'an, Qinglong Temple was where the master Huiguo taught esoteric Buddhism to the Japanese monk Kūkai, who took the teaching back to Japan in 806, so the temple is revered as a cradle of both Chinese and Japanese esoteric Buddhism. The temple was destroyed in 1086 and forgotten until archaeologists located its site in 1963; halls in Tang style were rebuilt from the 1980s, with memorial halls to Huiguo and Kūkai and a Kūkai monument raised in 1982 together with the four prefectures of Shikoku. Cherry trees brought from Japan in 1986 draw crowds when they flower in spring.
