About Shuimu Mountain

A wooded mountain near Yunnanyi with the Shuimu Temple complex, one of the earliest Buddhist sites in Yunnan, a centre of Chan (Zen) Buddhism in the west of the province and a royal temple under the Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms. In the temple's front courtyard stands a 15-tier square brick pagoda about 18 m tall, first built in the Dali kingdom and restored in 1605, and about a kilometre to the north lies a forest of 72 monks' tomb stupas, said to be the largest such group in south-west China. Xu Xiake, the Ming travel writer, was among its visitors.
