About Xiangyan Temple

A Buddhist temple in the hills at Cangfang, founded in the Tang dynasty as the seat of the Chan master Nanyang Huizhong and long counted among the four great temples of the Central Plains. Only the upper temple survives, as the lower temple was submerged by the Danjiangkou Reservoir in 1978; its Ming and Qing halls, library and stone archway are known for their brick, wood and stone carving and for a large mural in the main hall.
