About Birds' Paradise and Liang Qichao's Former Residence
Birds' Paradise is a river islet in Tianma village covered by a banyan grove that has grown from a single tree over more than 380 years, home to colonies of egrets and night herons that fly out and return at dawn and dusk; boats circle the island, and Ba Jin's 1933 essay about it made it famous across China. About 2 km to the east in Chakeng village is the family home of the late-Qing reformer and writer Liang Qichao, a brick-and-timber house with his study and a covered walkway, with a memorial hall on his life beside it.
